An online auction for a six-year-old McDonald’s burger and fries has been shut down by eBay after bids reached $150.

Canadian Dave Alexander listed the historic cheeseburger meal on the site with a series of pictures showing how little it had changed over the years.

The farmer, from Ontario, purchased the meal on June 7, 2012, as part of an experiment into McDonald’s food and claims it never rots.

“I had heard rumours about these things not going bad,” he told local radio station 980 CFPL.

“We live on a farm, and things that we grow here go bad regularly and I thought it was an urban legend.”

The burger bun still looks almost new

The burger and chips have been sitting on a cabinet in his house for more than six years, but have changed very little in appearance.

"The fries are stunningly good looking. The fries look like they were purchased this morning," Mr Alexander told As It Happens.

"The burger itself has darkened a little bit. The bun is about as hard as a hockey puck, but it looks just like it's brand new cosmetically."

eBay pulled the advert for violating its food policy

After listing the rare food item on eBay for $29 (£22), a bidding war quickly broke out and reached $150 (£112).

However, eBay has now pulled the advert from its site because it violates its food policy, which requires all food to have a “clearly marked expiration or use by date”.

The Standard has contacted eBay for comment.
