Former US President Barack Obama is likely to get an invite to the royal wedding - but Donald Trump will almost certainly be snubbed, according to Washington sources.

The current president conspicuously failed to congratulate the newly engaged couple yesterday, unlike the Obamas and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

As with Prince William and Kate Middleton’s decision not to invite the Obamas to their nuptials, Mr Trump would probably be missed off the list because of the immense additional cost of protecting the US leader.

But while Barack and Michelle Obama have remained close to the royals - particularly with Prince Harry - Miss Markle may have her own reasons for keeping her distance.

In a US TV interview during the 2016 election, Miss Markle said she might decide to stay in Toronto—where her show Suits was being filmed - if Mr Trump were to win.

The future princess was a Hillary Clinton supporter and branded Mr Trump as “divisive” and “misogynistic.”

“Trump has made it easy to see that you don’t really want that kind of world that he’s painting,” she added.

Kensington Palace refused to comment on the wedding guest list but a White House insider admitted: “The president isn’t holding his breath waiting for an invite. It’s not on his list of priorities - he has a country to run.”

An added worry for the royal planners is that including the Trumps could lead to protests marring the couple’s big day.

When Theresa May suggested a possible state visit, polls suggested that more than two million people would take part in protests against him.

Mr Trump’s visit to the UK early in 2018 has now been recast as a “working visit.”

Mr Trump’s tweets yesterday were confined to tax reform and taking pot shots at CNN.

His wife, Melania, did meet Harry at the Invictus Games in Tokyo, but she didn’t congratulate the couple either, tweeting photos of the Christmas decorations at the White House.
