President Donald Trump branded a rival politician a “fake Pocahontas” and offered her $1 million to prove her claims of Native American ancestry.

Mr Trump also mocked the #MeToo women’s movement in his attack on Senator Elizabeth Warren, widely tipped to be the Democrat challenger in the 2020 presidential election.

During a Montana rally the president offered Ms Warren a DNA test and said: “I’ll give you a million dollars for your favourite charity, paid for by Trump, if you take the test and it shows you’re an Indian.”

He first gave her the racially-charged nickname during his 2016 presidential campaign.

He told the rally she “proclaims she’s of Indian heritage - because her mother said she has high cheekbones, that’s her only evidence” and then said she could use a DNA kit.

He added: “We have to do it gently because we’re in the Me Too generation, we have to be very gentle”, mocking the international women’s movement campaigning against sexual misconduct.

Senator Warren, 69, says her mother’s grandparents had Cherokee or Delaware Native American blood.

Pocahontas was the Native American woman who saved the life of English captive John Smith in Virginia in the 17th century, and was immortalised in a Disney movie. She died in Gravesend after marrying an Englishman.

Senator Warren accused Mr Trump of using DNA tests on immigrant children separated from their parents, and model Chrissy Teigen described him as a “dips**t” over his remarks.

In his Montana speech Mr Trump referred to his meeting next week with “fine” Vladimir Putin. He also urged Nato “to start paying your bills.”
