Chilling pictures have emerged showing guns and bullets strewn across the floor of the Las Vegas gunman's hotel room.

The images show two of the 23 assault rifles found with the body of Stephen Paddock at the Mandalay Bay hotel after he killed at least 59 people and injured at least 600 more.

Boston 25 journalist Jacqui Heinrich tweeted the pictures of the weapons on the floor of the hotel room, surrounded by rounds of ammunition.

A hammer – possibly used to smash the windows of the room – is seen beside one of the guns as well as a stand used to rest the weapon on.

Police have said that, on Sunday night, 64-year-old Paddock broke two windows in his 32nd floor hotel room and began shooting people attending the Route 91 Country Music Festival.

The 22,000-strong crowd fled, screaming, from the gunshots but hundreds were hit before they could get to safety.

After police located the gunman and stormed Paddock's room, they found his body as well as a collection of weapons. He is believed to have killed himself.

He had carried the weapons and ammunition into the hotel room in ten suitcases when he checked in on Thursday, four days before the shooting.

The guns included an AR-15 and an AK-47 as well as four Daniel Defense DDM4 rifles, three FN-15s and other rifles made by Sig Sauer.

When police raided Paddock's home they found a further 19 weapons which he left behind, making a total of 42 different types of weaponry.

Paddock, who lived in a retirement community in Nevada, has no links to any terrorist groups or ideology and detectives are yet to reveal his motive.
