'A special, wonderful girl': Carrie Fisher's ex-husband Paul Simon breaks silence on her shock death

Carrie Fisher’s former husband Paul Simon has broken his silence on her death four days after she suffered a cardiac arrest.

The American musician, who was married to the Star Wars actress from 1983 to 1984, took to Twitter to voice his sorrow.

The singer, best-known as part of the duo Simon & Garfunkel, tweeted: “Yesterday was a horrible day. Carrie was a special, wonderful girl. It’s too soon.”

Her former husband was among the wave of stars to pay their respects after Ms Fisher’s family announced the 60-year-old died on Tuesday.

The Star Wars actress was being treated in intensive care after she suffered a cardiac arrest on a transatlantic flight from London to Los Angeles on Friday.

Though Ms Fisher had many lovers including Star Wars co-star Harrison Ford she was only married once.

Ms Fisher and Mr Simon were involved in a turbulent relationship for nearly 12 years though they were only married for 12 months.

She has one daughter, Billie Lourd, with American talent agent Bryan Lourd.

Stars took to social media to pay their respects, with Star Trek actor William Shatner tweeting: "I'm deeply saddened to learn of the death of Carrie Fisher. I will miss our banterings. A wonderful talent & light has been extinguished."

Mark Hamill, who played the main role of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars alongside Fisher, tweeted: "No words. Devastated."

Actress Whoopi Goldberg said: "Carrie Fisher has passed, she was funnier & smarter than anyone had the right to be. Sail On Silver Girl. Condolences Debbie & Billie R.I.P."

Mia Farrow added: "Carrie was brilliant, funny and talented. Sending huge love be to her mom, her daughter, Billie and her many friends."

The actress was born in Beverly Hills, California, to actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher, who also found fame hosting his own television show.

Ms Fisher made her acting debut in 1975 in Shampoo, starring alongside household names such as Warren Beatty and Goldie Hawn.

She was catapulted to mega-stardom when she played Princess Leia in the sci-fi blockbuster in 1977.

She also appeared in other hit films such as When Harry Met Sally, Hannah and Her Sisters and The Blues Brothers in a career spanning more than four decades.
