A bus driver has been suspended in India after video footage emerged of him letting a monkey drive his bus.

Images show the Langur monkey sitting on and appearing to operate the wheel of the vehicle as it sped along a highway in southern Karnataka state.

Witnesses said the primate had boarded the bus with a passenger before insisting on joining the driver.

In footage of the incident the driver, named as M Prakash, seems unconcerned, allowing his furry companion to grab the steering wheel.

As the monkey starts lending his driving skills, passengers can be heard encouraging the situation rather than complaining about it.

The creature is said to have sat on the wheel for a few minutes before reaching its destination and hopping off with its owner.

Karnataka State Road Transport Service said it had “removed” the driver after the incident, which is believed to have happened last Monday.

The bus company said in a statement: “We have removed the driver from duty and have asked the divisional security inspector to conduct an inquiry.

“He won’t be assigned any further duty till the probe is completed; he could even be suspended.”
