A bus driver came to the rescue of barefoot baby spotted walking alone towards a busy freeway intersection.

Irena Ivic was driving on an overpass when she spotted the little girl in a red onesie and nappy.

She halted the bus and ran out to scoop the baby up before carrying her onto the bus where passengers were watching in disbelief.

“I’m just grateful I was in the right place at the right time,” she said at a commendation ceremony held in her honour yesterday.

The child went missing last month in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.

Officials believe the child’s mother had a mental health crisis. She was later reunited with her father.
