A British tourist was hauled off a plane in Bali after attempting to bring a bomb on board, Indonesian officials said.

The man was reportedly removed from the Qatar Airways flight and questioned by airport security staff before being cleared to leave.

The man, named by authorities as Davide Fogli, is said to have declared the toy bomb to officials at Ngurah Rai International airport, telling them he planned to take it to a New Year's Eve party.

After being told he was not allowed to bring it on board, he left it at the security point and proceeded to check in as normal.

However, as the aircraft, bound for Doha, taxied down the runway, a request was made for the passenger to be removed for questioning.

It comes as Bali remains on high alert for possible terrorist attacks on Western and Russian tourists.

According to The Telegraph, an official said: “This was a very realistic toy and in the current climate, we wanted to know more about his plans,”

Reports state officers attended the toy store where the bomb was bought before Mr Fogli was released with a friend 24 hours after being taken in for questioning.

The Telegraph reported the 48-year-old graphic designer declined to speak to media after leaving the police station.
