A British teenager has won nearly a million pounds after he and his teammate placed second in the Fortnite World Cup finals.

Jaden Ashman, 15, from Essex, and his dutch partner Dave Jong, will split the $2.25m (£1.8million) prize money.

The teenager competes under the name Wolfiez in the popular online shooter game that has 250 million players worldwide.

The event prize pool was $30 million, making it the biggest ever at an e-sports event.

Jaden and Dave were competing in the duos event.

Jaden's win was hailed by gamers as being particularly impressive as he opted to use a traditional handheld video game controller instead of a mouse and keyboard.

Players using controllers are widely seen to be at a disadvantage, however there is some controversy as players with controllers are given aim-assist while they play.

Fortnite creator Epic Games said they are "the same settings that are available on the live game."

Norwegian Emil Bergquist Pedersen and Austrian David W won by 51 points to Ashman and Jong’s 47.

The singles final will take place on Sunday.

The winner will take home $3 million and become the first Fortnite World Champion.

Jaden’s mum, Lisa Dallman, told the BBC that accepting her son as an e-sports player has been “very hard” and she had thrown out an X-Box in the past.

The three-day event, which opened on Friday, was held inside the Arthur Ashe tennis stadium in New York which also hosts the final of the US Open.

More than 100 finalists have taken part in the event's various competitions, having been whittled down from around 40 million who attempted to qualify for the tournament and compete for the top prize.

More than 30 countries have been represented at the finals, which also featured a "creative" tournament where teams of four aimed to complete different in-game trials.
