Assad ‘loses asylum offer’ if he uses chemical weapons

'Must face trial': Syria's Bashar al Assad
5 December 2012

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has warned of “huge consequences” if Syria uses chemical weapons.

Mr Ban suggested that he would not support an asylum deal for President Bashar Assad as a way to end Syria’s civil war. He said: “I again urge in the strongest possible terms that they must not consider using this kind of deadly weapons of mass destruction.

“I have warned that if in any case this should be used, then there will be huge consequences. And they should be accountable.”

US president Barack Obama this week warned Syria that any use of such weapons against its own people would be “totally unacceptable”.

He said the “world is watching” President Assad, following intelligence reports that chemical weapons parts were being moved around Syria in recent days.

Damascus has said it would not use such weapons on his own people even if it had them.
