An armed fugitive who allegedly killed two women, including his girlfriend, has been arrested in the US after his car crashed following a police pursuit.
A manhunt for Alex Deaton, 28, began after his lover Heather Robinson, 30, was found strangled in her apartment in Mississippi.
It is alleged that he also shot and wounded a woman jogging outside Ms Robinson’s home then blasted Brenda Pinter, 69, to death at a rural church in another part of the state next day.
The fugitive left a 2,000-mile trail of violence as police pursued him for six days through Missouri and Oklahoma.
He is accused of a gunpoint carjacking in New Mexico on Tuesday night before the stolen Honda Civic was spotted by officers near Pratt in Kansas.
Deaton fled on foot and is alleged to have shot a grocery store clerk, leaving the man in a critical condition, before stealing his car.
He was finally caught when police deployed spikes to burst his tyres causing Deaton to crash.
The collision sparked a fireball and he was pulled out and placed under arrest.
Marshall Fisher, head of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, said: “He’s led us on quite the chase the last few days, and everybody here is very happy that he’s in custody.”
