Animals of Sri Lanka shoot selfies in tourism documentary

1/9

The wildlife of Sri Lanka managed to shoot a few selfies during the filming of a short tourism documentary that was released today.

The film, commissioned by the The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB), features intimate footage shot with and by animals from across the country, including elephants, turtles, leopards, blue whales and fishing cats.

The project was spearheaded by an all-female British crew of nature documentary filmmakers, who used natural history filming techniques and specialist technology to capture the island from the perspective of its fauna.

Director and producer of the three-minute film, Nicola Brown, said: “Sri Lanka is such a beautiful country with incredible wildlife and we thought a great way of telling its story visually would be to put the viewer in the world of the animals.

“We also had an opportunity to put the cameras in the animal’s world – literally. Cheeky toque macaque monkeys in Polonnaruwa quickly learned how to unscrew our camera rigs and even ran away with our kit!”

The short film includes footage of a newly hatched sea-turtle’s journey to the sea and a group of the world’s largest elephants travelling through Udawalawe National Park in the south of the island.

SLTPB Chairman, Kishu Gomes, said: “Sri Lanka is like nowhere else in the world. We wanted to visualise what travellers can do, see and feel when they visit Sri Lanka in a way that is as unique as our country.”

Brown’s filming and production team all have experience working with the BBC’s Natural History Unit, which is responsible for series such as Blue Planet II, Africa and Human Planet.
