The American former student Amanda Knox had her human rights breached by the Italian authorities during the investigation into the killing of Briton Meredith Kercher, European judges ruled today.

The European Court of Human Rights said that Ms Knox, 31, had been denied her right to a proper investigation, legal assistance, and the help of an interpreter following her arrest in November 2007 over the death of Ms Kercher in Perugia earlier that month.

They said the facts supported a claim by Ms Knox, who was initially convicted but later cleared of involvement in the murder, that she had “sustained degrading treatment” during her detention.

They rules she had also been left “particularly vulnerable” after being deprived of a solicitor in an action which had “irreparably undermined the fairness” of her questioning.

The judges said that Italy should pay Ms Knox 10,400 Euros in damages and another 8,000 Euros in expenses. One man, Rudy Guede from Perugia, is serving a 16 year sentence for Ms Kercher’s murder.
