Three people have been killed and three others were missing after two sightseeing planes crashed in mid-air off the coast of Alaska.

Ten people have been rushed to hospital in the south-eastern town of Ketchikan following the collision on Monday.

One of the casualties was in a critical condition.

The two planes – one with 11 people on board and the other with five passenger and crew – went down near the south eastern town of Ketchikan.

The passengers, from the cruise ship Royal Princess, were on sightseeing flights, one of which was operated by Taquan Air.

A spokeswoman for the Ketchikan flightseeing company said Taquan has suspended operations while federal authorities investigated the deadly crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it was not immediately clear what caused the collision.
