The winner of a charity auction will get the chance to demolish one of President Trump’s former casinos and raise money for a good cause in the process.

The Trump Plaza casino in Atlantic City closed its doors in 2014 and has fallen into such disrepair it will be dynamited next month.

Politicians in the resort city in New Jersey, which is famed for its nightclubs and casinos, hope the auction will raise more than $1 million for a local charity.

“Some of Atlantic City’s iconic moments happened there, but on his way out, Donald Trump openly mocked Atlantic City, saying he made a lot of money and then got out,” said Marty Small, the mayor. “I wanted to use the demolition of this place to raise money for charity.”

The city’s Boys & Girls Club, which will benefit from the auction, provides after-school and holiday clubs as well as education programs for local youngsters.

The casino, which was built in the middle of the city’s boardwalk, hosted many high profile boxing matches often attended by Trump in his property developer days.

The building has been empty for six years and last year large parts of the facade came loose and fell off one of the hotel towers.
