A woman found dead in a swimming pool with a man had celebrated her 22nd birthday the previous day, an inquest heard today.
Komba Kpakiwa, 31, and Josephine Foday, 22, died at the weekend at Down Hall Country House Hotel in Hatfield Heath Essex.
Ms Foday died the day after her 22nd birthday.
An inquest into their deaths opened and adjourned today at Chelmsford Coroner’s Court.
Witnesses had seen them alive 15 minutes before they died.
Mr Kpakiwa, from Erith, went to the pool after going out during the day.
He went to his room to get changed before going to the “pool area”, when he was seen by another guest.
A witness found him 15 minutes later floating “face down in the pool”.
Mr Kpakiwa was pulled out of the water and an ambulance was called but he could not be revived.
Miss Foday, from Greenwich, was also discovered in the same manner.
The coroner’s officer, Mrs Frost, said in a statement: “Miss Foday was staying at the hotel for her birthday.
“On the 27 April 2013, Miss Foday had been shopping during the day and had returned to the hotel during the early evening, “She went to her room for a change of clothes and then went to the pool area.
“Miss Foday was witnessed by another hotel guest who was just leaving the pool.
“The witness returned approximately 15 minutes later where he found Miss Foday floating face down in the pool.
“Help was called and Miss Foday was pulled from the water.
“The ambulance arrived and after protocol was carried out Miss Foay was confirmed as deceased.”
Both post-mortems are pending analysis.
Deputy coroner for Essex Eleanor McGann adjourned the inquest to a date to be determined and did not release the bodies.
Police have ruled both deaths non-suspicious.
