The UK's newspapers celebrated the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's third child with pictures of the newborn prince splashed across the front pages.

The royal infant, wrapped up against the cool Spring weather, was pictured nestled in the arms of his mother as the couple posed with their new son outside the Lindo Wing on Monday.

The Daily Telegraph carried a full page photograph of Kate cradling the new prince in her arms on the steps of London’s St Mary's Hospital.

Its headline read: “Welcome to the family: a new prince for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.”

The Daily Mail went with the headline: “His first royal wave!”, adding: “Wrapped in a white shawl, our newest royal makes his first public appearance at less than seven hours old.”

The Mirror described the birth as a “triple crown” for the royal couple, while the Daily Star wrote: “Red, White and New” above a front page image of William and Kate with the baby.

It comes after the pair showed off their new son to adoring crowds for the first time when they left the hospital just hours after the birth on Monday.

Prince George, 4, and Princess Charlotte, 2, also travelled to the hospital to visit their new baby brother.

They are now settling into life as a family of five after bringing their new baby son home from hospital.

William and Kate have now retreated to Kensington Palace after introducing their third child to the world on the steps of the exclusive maternity unit, the Lindo Wing.

The name of the baby prince of Cambridge, who was born on Monday at 11.01am weighing 8lb 7oz, has yet to be revealed.

Royals traditionally keep the public guessing before revealing their choice.

William and Kate will want to share the name with the Queen and the rest of their family before making it public.
