UK weather forecast: Snow to hit northern areas on Friday (and maybe even in London)

Snow is expected to fall in the northern parts of the UK over the weekend, with a small chance of showers falling in southern areas such as London.

The Met Office has forecast unsettled and colder weather for most parts of the country this week.

Snow is forecast to settle over higher ground in the northern half of the UK with lower levels further south, said the Met Office.

Meteorologist Bonnie Diamond told the Standard: “Whilst sleet or snow showers can’t be ruled out further south - including London - the chance of snow accumulating here is very low."

The Met Office added that any snow that falls in the south is expected to be more “transient in nature”.

Steve Ramsdale, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Although we’re going to see a few days with colder conditions, we shouldn’t be surprised that the start of winter brings a brief spell of wintry weather.

"Some parts of the UK, especially northern hills, may see snow, but for many this will only be short lived.”

Yellow weather warnings are in force for snow and ice in parts of Scotland on Wednesday and Thursday. Snow showers and icy stretches could bring some travel disruption from Wednesday evening and into the next day.

The Met Office said it is uncertain of exactly where snow will fall in the UK.

Bands of wintry showers and frosts are likely for north-western parts of the UK and from Wednesday onwards, showers over north-west Scotland will turn increasingly wintry.

The unsettled conditions are forecast to continue into the weekend with periods of strong winds, heavy rain and wintry showers.

Chris Bulmer, Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist added: "Although winter has started rather abruptly, this colder spell is expected to be part of typical seasonal fluctuations and doesn’t set the mould for the rest of winter."
