Londoners could soon be reaching for their sunglasses and even digging out the suncream with reports of 16 days of warm weather following a sunny May bank holiday.

Some forecasters predict that temperatures will jump in time for the long weekend.

Temperatures of up to 20 degrees will warm the bones of the nation on May 31 following an expected washout this weekend.

Winds of up to 60mph were blustering through parts of England and Wales on Friday, according to The Met Office which has issued a severe weather warning.

Forecasters said that there will also be heavy showers across parts of the country, with up to 100mm of rainfall on higher ground.

However, people can finally take shelter inside pubs and restaurants after eased Covid restrictions were introduced on May 17.

While the country endures more miserable conditions over the coming days, it is hoped Bank Holiday Monday will see a return to hot weather at long last.

AccuWeather forecasts temperatures of between 17 and 20 degrees next weekend, with highs of 18 degrees in London.

The warmer weather will continue into next month with temperatures of 20 degrees or more expected for 16 consecutive days from June 15 to 30, according to its online forecasting service.

However, the wet weather will continue over this coming weekend according to the Met Office.

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: “I’m afraid it’s a rather unsettled picture,” he said. “Saturday night and into Sunday we have yet another system working its way across bringing rain and showers across the UK, bringing more showery conditions in behind it.

“Anywhere could see a shower but they are likely to be heaviest along the North Sea coast.”

Those wanting to take advantage of eased outdoor restrictions, with up to 30 people now allowed to meet outside, may be better off scheduling their plans for Saturday.

Mr Madge added: “I think Saturday is going to be the best day for many over the weekend. It certainly looks clearer and probably the second half of Saturday will give most people the opportunity to see some clearer weather.

“But it’s quite short-lived, so if people are hoping it will extend into Sunday they will be disappointed.

“Western parts probably have the best of the conditions late afternoon on Saturday and probably the best conditions early on Sunday in the east. But the rain will sweep across the whole of the UK.

“There’s likely to be the prospect of some sunshine but how long the duration of that will be between showers is uncertain.”
