Virgin Atlantic marked Valentine's Day by flying one of its planes in the shape of a heart.

The Airline flew an Airbus A330 over the southwestern tip of England, cutting across the Cornish coastline.

The aircraft, named 'HonkyTonk Woman', departed Gatwick Airport at 11am.

Captain JJ Burrows, director of aircraft operations for Virgin Atlantic, said: “We had a training flight planned for 14 February, and when we realised it was Valentine’s Day we decided to have a little fun.

“Our special heart-shaped flight took off from Gatwick, travelling across the south of England and over the Cornish coast to form a heart shape at around 30,000ft.”

Virgin Atlantic is holding a special one-day sale to mark the occasion, with savings of up to £279 per person on selected Premium Economy seats.

In January, aviations fans were delighted by the skills of an artistic pilot who appeared to draw a plane in the sky.

While in November US Navy officials admitted one of their planes was used to create a giant penis in the clouds.
