UK weather forecast: Met Office warns snow may fall in London next week as temperatures continue to plummet

Bonnie Christian19 January 2019

Forecasters have warned snow could fall in London next week as temperatures continue to plunge across the UK.

A cold spell has gripped the country this week and the Met Office has said the mercury will continue to plummet freezing in parts of country over the coming days.

Temperatures sunk as low as -9C in parts of northern Scotland as the weekend began, while conditions in the south hovered a few degrees above freezing.

Largely grey, gloomy conditions and patches of rain and sleet are expected on Saturday in southern areas while a band of rain and snow is expected to hit the north of the UK on Sunday.

At the start of next week, conditions look set to turn even colder with the possibility of disruptive heavy rain, sleet and snow across the country.

The Met Office is also not ruling out sleet and snow in lower areas of the country on Monday and Tuesday.

“Most of the snow will be in higher ground and the further north you go the more likely for snow in those areas,” spokesman Mark Wilson said.

“At the moment we’re not expecting it in London but it is not completely out of the question,” he added.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Mr Wilson said the west of the UK is expected to see snow and sleet showers.

The wintery conditions will travel east by the end of the week.

“There’s uncertainty about whether it’ll reach London but the further east you go there is a greater chance of snow showers later next week,” Mr Wilson said.

He warned temperatures will turn even colder than they have been.

“It’ll feel very cold in the wind,” he said. “And it’ll feel colder still by the later part of next week.”

Temperatures sunk as low as -9C in parts of northern Scotland as the weekend began, while in the South conditions hovered a few degrees above freezing.
