Met Office issues 'danger to life' UK weather warning with freezing fog set to cover swathe of country

The Met Office has issued a "danger to life" warning with freezing fog set to cover a large part of the UK during Tuesday's morning rush hour.

Temperatures will drop to below freezing across the country on Monday night causing moisture to condense into fog between 4am to 11am.

In Scotland the mercury could drop to -9C while parts of England and Wales could see temperatures plummet to as low as -7C.

The fog will cover much of the south of England, the Midlands and the Yorkshire Dales. Commuters have been warned to drive carefully as visibility will be as low as 50m in some places.

Met Office Meteorologist Alex Burkill said: "The dense fog is particularly likely to cause travel disruption.

"Poor visibility will make for poor driving conditions."

Mr Burkill advised commuters to "drive slowly" and "drive sensibly".

He added: "If you can't see the car in front of you, you won't be aware of what's happening.

"It's better to arrive later than you expect than to have an accident."

The fog will lift in much of the country after 11am, however it is expected to remain in the Yorkshire Dales for much of the day
