Freezing fog is set to hit London with temperatures plunging to below 0C as a cold snap continues to grip the UK.

Weather experts have predicted widespread frost across the capital on Sunday morning while an ice warning remains in place for a large swathe of Britain.

Lows of minus 7C are expected in northern England and Scotland and people are being warned of injuries from slips and falls on icy roads and pavements.

Friday into Saturday night saw the mercury plunge to a low of minus 7.8C in Dalwhinnie in the Scottish Highlands.

The yellow warning for ice remains in place until 10.30am on Sunday for North Wales, the Midlands, northern England and eastern Scotland.

Freezing fog is set to descend on London overnight on Saturday into Sunday.

"It is going to be a very cold night, particularly across eastern areas,” forecaster Mark Wilson said.

"There will be some pretty dense freezing fog patches around as well, so if you are out for whatever reason it's best to wrap up and just be aware quite how cold it's going to be."

For London and the south east of England, temperatures are expected to drop as low as minus 3C on Saturday night.

Sunday will be cold but with some outbreaks of rain and temperatures forecast to rise from around 4C at midday to 8C in the evening.

But by Tuesday, the cold snap is set to come to an abrupt end as Atlantic winds bring in milder temperatures with daytime highs of 12C, reducing the chances of a white Christmas, Mr Wilson added.

"Generally I think it will be milder than it has been in the run-up to Christmas," he said.

"It's still too early to say but as things stand at the moment it's looking less likely than a week or so ago when it was very cold.

"The signs are it's unlikely to be a widespread white Christmas, but it's something we are continuing to monitor."

The UK has been hit by a heavy snow and ice over the last week, causing widespread disruption and schools to be closed.

Despite delays and cancellations on the Tube, on trains and at airports, Londoners revelled in the largest snowfall in the capital for nearly five years last Sunday.
