UK records 548 Covid deaths and 8,489 new infections

23 February 2021

The UK reported 548 further Covid-19 deaths and 8,489 new infections on Tuesday.

It represents a 31.4 per cent fall in deaths on last Tuesday, when 799 were reported. Cases have fallen by 33.2 per cent in a week.

Nearly 18 million people in the UK have now received a first dose of coronavirus vaccine, the latest Government figures show.

It comes the day after Boris Johnson announced his “cautious” road map out of lockdown for England, with almost all sectors of the economy set to be reopened by May 17.

The latest figures bring the UK coronavirus death toll to 121,305.

However, separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies for deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate, together with additional data on deaths that have occurred in recent days, show there have now been 141,000 deaths involving Covid-19 in the UK.

The total number of confirmed cases now stands at 4,134,639.

In London, analysis by the Standard shows that virus cases continue to fall sharply, with just 13 new infections reported in each Westminster and Islington boroughs on Monday.

Ten London boroughs already have a seven-day rate below 70, according to the figures published on Monday though the real number of infections is significantly higher than the confirmed cases, partly because of the number of people who have the disease asymptomatically.
