Aldi has been named the UK’s cheapest supermarket in January, a report reveals.

A report by Which?, named the chain as the cheapest supermarket customers can save money on last month, with Lidl a close second.

Customers at Aldi on average paid £129.24 in January, compared to Lidl shoppers who paid £132.37.

On a bigger shop this month, Morrisons was the cheapest in the larger trolley of groceries, at £156.05.

Waitrose remains the most expensive supermarket on the list, totalling £170.44 on average compared with Aldi, revealing a 32 per cent difference.

Which? retail editor Ele Clark said: “Our latest research has found Aldi held on to its position as the UK’s cheapest supermarket in January.

“With food prices continuing to put immense pressure on household budgets, it’s no surprise to see many people turning to the discounters, especially as shoppers could save 24 per cent by doing so.”

Aldi was also named the cheapest supermarket last March, again beating Lidl by the smallest of margins, this time 25p, and Waitrose by £20.

The previous Which? report also looked at the cost of a larger trolley of 135 items, with researchers looking at prices daily to work out where the best value supermarket to get your weekly shop from ia.

Which? also undertakes a report at the end of each year, on where the best place to shop is, for value for money.

Discount retailer Aldi was the cheapest monthly for seven out of 12 months in 2022, closely followed by Lidl, which was the cheapest for the five other months.
