Two new Minis to be built in UK

12 April 2012

The British motor industry was given a big boost with news that two new models are to be built at the Mini plant.

A coupe concept and a second concept car will be produced at the firm's factory in Cowley, near Oxford.

Both models will be unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show on September 15.

Cowley employs around 3,700 workers, building three versions of the Mini, which is owned by German giant BMW.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said: "The production of two new Minis is very good news for Oxford, and for the UK car industry. It is a demonstration of BMW's long-term commitment to the UK as it celebrates its 50th birthday this year.

"British drivers have had a long love affair with the Mini and I'm sure that this will continue for many years to come."

A company spokesman said it was too early to say whether any new jobs would be created by the production of the new models.
