The Government is fighting attempts by Brussels to introduce an MoT-type test for caravans.
The proposals would result in caravans weighing more than 750kg being forced to undergo checks similar to the MoT test for cars.
The Caravan Club has warned the move could damage the UK economy if it cut the number of people taking their caravans on holiday in the country.
A Department for Transport spokesman said the move also faced opposition in a number of other European Union countries.
He said: "Member states have already agreed that they do not want to introduce roadworthiness testing for caravans - this includes the UK Government and we will continue to resist it."
A Caravan Club spokesman told the Daily Mail: "The Caravan Club actively supports and encourages measures designed to improve road safety, but has seen no EU evidence that MoT-style testing on caravans will do so.
"Caravanning is inherently very safe, with extremely low levels of reported accidents."
Tory MEP Jacqueline Foster told the newspaper: "There is no evidence to suggest that the inclusion of caravans - a £6billion industry in the UK - and light commercial trailers would benefit from a road safety angle.
"We should be encouraging our leisure and tourism industries, not penalising them."
