An investigation has been launched into the deaths of a British couple found dead in their hotel room in Thailand.

George and Eileen Everitt, from Boston in Lincolnshire, were in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, when they died on Saturday.

The couple had been on holiday in the country since February 9 but the cause of their deaths is not yet known.

Thai police told the BBC that the couple were found dead in their room at the DownTown Inn.

They said Mrs Everitt, 74, was found lying on the bed, while Mr Everitt, 78, was in a sitting position on the floor, with his face falling forward on to the bed.

Police said no drugs, medicine or poison were found in the room.

Nor was there any evidence of violence or fighting in the room or any wound on their bodies.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said an investigation has been launched to try to establish how the couple died.

She added: "We are in touch with the family and are helping them through this very difficult time."
