Three teenagers have been accused of tormenting a homeless man by offering to buy him a meal before running off, leaving him with nothing.

Witnesses claimed the three girls aged around 16 or 17 taunted the man by offering him a free dinner at the branch of Nando's in Woolwich.

But once they got inside the restaurant they were said to have run off laughing and left him with nothing, leaving him apologising to workers in the restaurant.

After diners rounded on the group of girls when a web post about the incident went viral, a girl who claimed to be one of the teenagers involved responded online, saying the man had been harassing them in the street.

Customer Sally Cudmore posted a picture of the three girls yesterday evening, saying she saw them laughing and joking about the incident.

She later deleted the post, as anger mounted online at the girls' actions.

“I can’t believe what myself and other people just witnessed in Woolwich this evening,” she wrote.

“Three loud girls came storming in with their cameras filming and taking pics of a homeless man strolling along behind and they were saying ‘We are going to pay for your dinner and buy you Nando’s.’

“They told the man to sit down and the three girls went to the counter and was talking to the staff. They said they ordered his food and they was going outside for a cigarette.

“He asked what did you order? And they kept laughing, everyone in Nando’s were looking at them because of how loud they were being and this bright flash they had from their phones recording what was happening.”

She said that after the girls left, the homeless man went to the counter to ask what food had been left for him and discovered nothing was ordered.

“The man looked so upset and apologised to the workers,” Ms Cudmore said. “The girls were outside recording him and laughing hysterically while recording him as he was walking out.

“They had no intention of ordering him any food. Instead they followed him, laughing and terrorising him. Absolutely disgusting.”

Her post was quickly shared by hundreds of Facebook users and she eventually deleted it over concerns about the ages of the girls involved.

But not before people claiming to be the girls involved commented, defending themselves and accusing the man of making inappropriate comments.

“He shouldn’t of spoke to us the way he did,” one wrote. “We offered to buy him food but it wasn’t good enough then he started talkin inappropriately to us saying how he would do this and that …

“He was a grown man what was I supposed to do.”

But the witness replied: “You wasn’t scared I would have been the first to help if that was the case. You was bullying and taking the mickey out of a homeless man.

“Don’t try and justify yourself, we saw you and have you on video.”

The Standard has approached Nando's for comment.
