Most students would rather spend less on food than go without state of the art technology.

Nearly eight out ten (77%) in higher education say they would regularly eat beans on toast in order to afford the latest iPhones, laptops and other must-have devices.

The research by Maplin Electronics, revealed that more young women are prepared to eat cheaper food, (81 per cent), compared to men (66 per cent), if it means acquiring the newest gadgets.

One in four of the 1000 students polled said they spend more than £500 a year on tech for halls of residence. The study also found that the average cost of a student’s possessions is now £1,162.

Maplin marketing director, Breffni Walsh said: “Today’s students are super savvy when it comes to the right tech for education and entertainment, and are keen to stay connected, whether it is in the lecture theatre or using wi-fi at home.
