Staff face Corfu deaths trial

12 April 2012

Two Thomas Cook employees will go on trial in a Greek court over the deaths of two children from carbon monoxide poisoning after an appeal to dismiss the charges against them was turned down, the company said.

Richard Carson, 26, and Nicola Gibson, 24, will face negligence charges in connection with the deaths in Corfu of six-year-old Robert Shepherd and his sister Christianne, seven, in October 2006.

The appeal was heard at the Corfu Appeal Court.

A spokesman for Thomas Cook said: "Even though the District Attorney's appeal has not been upheld, we continue to support and stand by the two people concerned and believe they will be vindicated when the case is heard."

The trial is expected to take place in November, with 11 Greeks also facing charges along with the two Britons.

The children were poisoned with their father Neil Shepherd, 38, and his girlfriend, Ruth Beatson, 28. Both of the adults slipped into a coma but survived the incident.

The children's mother Sharon Wood was in the UK at the time of the tragedy.

The party were staying at the Louis Corcyra Beach Hotel when fumes from a neighbouring apartment apparently leaked in.

During the night of the tragedy, Mr Shepherd heard his daughter cry and crawled over to her bed. He tried to revive the children before he too was overwhelmed by the gas.

The children, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, were enjoying a half-term holiday with their father and his partner when the tragedy happened.
