A man who targeted and raped two sex workers in his Chelsea flat has been sentenced to 19 years in prison and five years on license.

Sajad Jamalvatan, 25, was convicted of five counts of rape against the women between August and October 2019.

He was sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court on May 14 after being found guilty at the same court following a 14-day trial.

During an investigation police encouraged one of the victims, a Brazilian woman who had left the country, to return to the UK to give evidence.

Detectives, who worked on the investigation for more than a year, also obtained and downloaded mobile phone information and combed through hours of CCTV footage.

The investigation uncovered that Jamalvatan had been using escort websites to contact sex workers and arrange transactional sexual interactions, often requesting them to meet him at his flat in Chelsea.

Once the women were in the flat, he would pretend to transfer money to them on his banking app.

The victims would quickly realise they were in danger and try to escape but were subsequently overpowered by him, police said.

If the victims tried to defend themselves the 25-year-old would become violent, they added.

Detective Constable James Drummond, from the Central West Public Protection Unit, said: “Jamalvatan is a man who has a very clear victim profile – vulnerable women. It was determined at court that Jamalvatan felt the women he targeted were not worthy of his respect, and he sought to undermine their reports of rape by suggesting to police that they were not trustworthy because of their work.

“We know that it can be incredibly difficult for victims of sexual assault to come forward and explain what has happened to them, that is why we feel there may be more women who have suffered at the hands of this man.”

Police are now appealing to anyone else who believes they were a victim of Jamalvatan to get in contact so that the police can offer the support that they are entitled to.

If you feel that you have been a victim of sexual assault, please contact police on 999 or 101. You can also contact Crimestoppers UK completely anonymously on on 0800 555 111.
