Queen may meet Sarkozy's new wife

12 April 2012

Speculation is mounting that French President Nicolas Sarkozy will be accompanied by his new former supermodel bride during his forthcoming state visit to the UK.

Mr Sarkozy, who tied the knot with model-turned-singer Carla Bruni at the Elysee Palace in Paris , was previously invited by the Queen.

But Buckingham Palace could not confirm whether Mr Sarkozy's glamorous wife, 40, with whom he had a whirlwind courtship, will be with him.

The President, 53, will visit the UK from Wednesday March 26 to Friday March 28 and will stay at Windsor Castle.

But neither a spokesman for the royal household nor a spokeswoman for Downing Street could confirm any more details about the plans at this stage.

Asked who would be accompanying him on the visit, the Buckingham Palace spokesman said that would be a matter for France.

A Foreign Office spokesman also said it was "far too early to say" what the arrangements were going to be.

In a short statement, the couple said that they "were married this morning in the presence of their families in the strictest privacy".

Some reports earlier this year suggested that marriage could spare the embarrassment of the President and his then-girlfriend being offered separate bedrooms.

The French President's spokesman was unavailable to comment.
