Probe launched into factory death

A health and safety investigation has been launched after a man died in a factory accident in Merseyside

An investigation is under way after a 62-year-old man was killed in an industrial accident.

Police, fire and ambulance services were called to the Sonae chipboard plant in Kirkby, Merseyside, at around 10.50am on Saturday.

Police said the man, from Manchester, had suffered serious injuries and died at the scene.

Inquiries had established he was an employee of subcontractor working on a designated, segregated area of the site, a Merseyside Police spokesman said.

His next of kin were informed and family liaison officers were providing assistance.

The death follows an incident last December when two workers died after they fell into a machine at the factory.

A joint investigation has now been launched by Merseyside Police and the Health and Safety Executive.

George Howarth, Labour MP for Knowsley, said on his website: "My first thoughts are with the family of the man who died earlier today at the plant. I'm deeply saddened by this latest tragic incident.

"It's barely three weeks since I said that 'as matters stand I don't see how anyone can have any confidence in Sonae to operate safely and with stability'. It's too early to comment on the details about this tragic incident, but I sincerely hope that this will never happen again."

He was referring to comments he made last month following a fire at the factory in June that caused extensive damage.
