Police hunt: officers searched a dual carriageway in Middlesborough for the severed penis

A busy road was closed this morning while police searched for the severed penis of a man found seriously injured nearby.

The 40-year-old man was discovered in a distressed way by officers on the A66 in Middlesborough at 4.50am this morning.

He was suffering with wounds to his groin area and was taken to hospital.

A section of the dual carriageway was closed off while police hunted for his missing penis.

Police have arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of assault who remains in police custody.

A spokesman for Cleveland Police said: “Police can confirm that the man found this morning on the A66 had wounds to his groin area.

"A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and is currently in police custody.

"Officers are continuing to investigate and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on the non-emergency number 101."

The road closure has since been lifted.
