Open-top carriage weather or not

Prince William and Kate Middleton will travel from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace in an open-topped 1902 State Landau
12 April 2012

Prince William and Kate Middleton will brave the elements and travel from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace in an open-topped 1902 State Landau.

The couple will pass the cheering crowds in The Mall after their wedding ceremony in the fairytale carriage.

With showers forecast for the wedding day there had been fears an enclosed carriage would be used.

But a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman confirmed the couple would use the State Landau.

The decision will mean the tens of thousands of spectators who are expected to flock to the royal wedding procession route will get a good view of William and Kate.

The 1902 State Landau was the one used by the Prince and Princess of Wales on their wedding day in 1981.

On that sunny July day nearly 30 years ago, the carriage took Charles and Diana from St Paul's Cathedral to Buckingham Palace.

William and Kate will have a shorter journey of one-and-a-half miles from the abbey to the palace.

If it had been raining, they would have travelled in the majestic Glass Coach - the mode of transport used by Diana on her way to St Paul's for her wedding.

The State Landau is led by four horses and is accompanied by two horsemen and two footmen.
