More than half of all UK pets will receive Christmas presents this year, new data shows.

Pet owners will spend an average of £13 on their pampered pets with one in ten claiming that their pets are more appreciative of gifts than family members.

The independent survey commissioned by Amazon found that people in the north east of England are the most indulgent of their pets with 72 per cent of owners giving their furry friends between one to three gifts.

Over 74 per cent of people will be buying gifts for their dogs with the top presents including dog bow ties and reindeer Christmas collars.

In London, cats are the most spoiled, with 90 per cent of owners purchasing Christmas gifts for their feline friends.

Amazon teamed up with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home to deliver a Christmas donation delivering gifts to all of the charity’s residents.

Gemma Smith, Battersea’s Canine Behaviourist and Training Advisor said: “It’s no surprise to hear the nation’s pets will be waking up to a magical Christmas this year, with lots of presents waiting for them under their Christmas tree. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for the dogs and cats in our care – and the best present we could give them this year is a loving new home,”

She continued: “We’re grateful to Amazon for kindly donating presents to help bring some festive cheer to our homeless dogs and cats looking for a family this Christmas.”
