Meghan Markle filmed speaking with a 'more British' sounding accent on outing with the Queen

It appears that life as a public figure in the UK is beginning to rub off on Meghan Markle, who was filmed speaking in a very British-sounding accent during a recent royal outing.

In footage posted by a fan, the Duchess of Sussex was caught on camera interacting with the British public during a royal visit to Cheshire with the Queen.

During the video Meghan’s accent appears to sound more British than American as she discusses the weather with onlookers.

Speaking after riding the royal train with the Queen in their first outing together without Prince Harry, Ms Markle was filmed greeting the public and shaking hands with her adoring fans.

Ms Markle greets one fan saying: "Hi, it's nice to meet you."

She then thanks fans who complemented her dress.

One fan remarks: "You look gorgeous."

Then in a distinctly British-sounding accent Ms Markle says: "Thank you, that's so nice of you to say."

She then receives a complement about her wedding day, to which Ms Markle replies: "Yes we all had a great day I think. The sun was shining for us... like today, no rain at the moment."

Elocution and Vocal coach Matt Simandl who trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School said that there could be evidence that the Duchess has been taking elocution lessons.

“I think Meghan is truly humble and making a great effort to fit in with the rest of the royal family.

“The accent she has chosen to adopt is heading towards a more British sound with a hint of her American roots underneath, its almost like a posh American/transatlantic accent.

“Perhaps she is taking elocution lessons in order to refine this further.”

But Mr Simandl said that the change in Meghan’s voice could also be due to her being surrounded by British people on a daily basis.

“She may simply be an ‘accent sponge’ who soaks in the accent around her, particularly being so close to Harry.

“Who knows, we may hear a completely British accent from her over time,” Mr Simandl said.

Luke Nicholson, an accent coach for Improve Your Accent said it is not uncommon for people to change their accent based on their social circles.

He said: "It's fairly common for people to change their accent depending on who they are surrounded by.

"If you like someone or you want to impress someone then you will change their accent subconsciously to sound more like them.

"The process is called 'accommodating' your accent."

Since her wedding to Prince Harry, Meghan has made a number of changes to her appearance.

Her signature “messy bun” hairstyle has become more refined and her wardrobe adheres to traditional royal etiquette.
