Man who gave lover HIV 'despicable'

12 April 2012

An Italian chef found guilty of knowingly infecting his lover with HIV and hepatitis C was branded "despicable" by police.

Giovanni Mola refused to wear condoms after beginning a sexual relationship with the woman in 2003 in Edinburgh.

The 38-year-old, who claimed to have had 200 lovers, had been diagnosed with the viruses three years earlier.

He showed no emotion as the jury of eight women and seven men returned a majority verdict after less than two hours of deliberation.

At the High Court in Glasgow, judge Lord Hodge told Mola the indifference he showed towards his victim was "deeply disturbing".

Outside court, Detective Chief Inspector Adrian Lawrie, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "Police were as massively impressed by the victim's quiet dignity and courage as they were horrified by the complete and utter disregard shown by Mola. He is despicable."

The Italian, formerly of Home Street, Edinburgh, insisted throughout the eight-day trial he had always worn a condom during his five-month relationship with the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

But his victim, who was not in court to hear the verdict, said he had "aggressively" refused to wear contraception and the jury believed her.

Mola was convicted of culpably and recklessly failing to tell the woman he carried the infection. He was also found guilty of endangering her life and her health.

Mola will be sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on March 7.
