UK weather forecast: hail and high winds forecast for London, with snow possible in parts of south east

Parts of the south-east could see snow this week as forecasters issued weather warnings across the UK.

Hail and high winds have been predicted for London, with forecasts of gusts of up to 30mph.

The Met Office today extended a yellow weather warning for snow and ice to cover the south east of England including parts of Hampshire and Gloucestershire.

Wintry showers are expected on high ground surrounding London going into Wednesday, as temperatures plummet to freezing, forecaster Emma Sharples told the Standard.

London may be hit with hail showers while gale force winds measuring up to 30 mph, she added.

A yellow warning for wind has been issued from 9pm on Wednesday until 11am on Thursday.

Temperatures in the capital look set to hover just above freezing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Ms Sharples said, while the mercury could dip below 0C in other parts of the south east.

In Scotland and northern England, motorists faced treacherous driving conditions and dozens of schools have been closed due to sub-zero temperatures and snow.

In some areas that saw snow, temperatures dropped to -2C.

Tulloch Bridge in Scotland had the largest snowfall with 8cm overnight.

Gritters were out in force across Scotland, with pictures on social media showing particularly difficult driving conditions on the M8 near Easterhouse.

Drivers were asked to avoid the M8 after long delays were reported during rush hour.

The A9 at Dalwhinnie was closed for two hours after a lorry jack-knifed close to the snow gates.

More than 50 schools and nurseries in the Highlands have been closed due to the weather with over 3,000 children enjoying a snow day.

Northern England and Northern Ireland have also seen flurries of snow, with 1cm reported in Lough Fea, Northern Ireland, and further accumulations expected through the day.

Luke Miall, a forecaster at the Met Office, said: "The forecast for today is it's likely to become a bit more wintry, so we could be seeing snow for many areas, with northern and western areas seeing frequent showers.

"It will stay cold, we will continue to feel that wind from the north west, quite gusty, so feeling bitterly cold outside today."
