Larry Sanders: I call on Brits to fight Donald Trump and his hateful policies

President Trump is not a new phenomenon on the world stage. We’ve seen his like before, those who would seek to play on fears of the other. Refugees and migrants. Muslims and African-Americans; all persecuted in an attempt to divide and conquer the American people.

But Donald Trump does not represent the America I know. After all, the United States is a nation built by immigrants that has been a beacon of hope to those seeking safety and protection across the world.

That his message of hate and anger failed to get more votes than his opponent should never be forgotten, and I commend the millions of people who do what they can to fight his racist agenda everyday across America.

Our London demonstration in opposition to him today is not only a way of showing that the UK does not endorse his hateful policies, it is a chance to send a message to the American people.

We see you standing up to Trump, we stand with your resistance, and we stand with you

The Green Party have been very clear, the UK should not roll out the red carpet to Donald Trump. Not only because his values are abhorrent, but also because it offers him a major PR coup at home. Middle America will watch him meet the Queen on Fox News and be under the impression that the UK supports the President.

I have nothing but respect to my fellow countrymen living in what has been labelled “Trump country”, but they must wake up to the fact that Donald Trump is not their champion. The post-industrial deprivation that many parts of the country have felt will not be solved by a man whose businesses have never hesitated to send jobs overseas.

We must cut away the lies of this administration and see it for what it is; corrupt, devoid of morality and hell-bent on lining the pockets of the World’s most powerful corporations.

But the people of the Britain mustn’t become complacent to what is happening in their own backyard.

Theresa May’s hostile environment towards refugees and migrants has been a disaster and has made life incredibly difficult for those who have come to the UK seeking a better life. By turning away refugees and showing a frankly callous attitude to the rights of EU migrants living here post-Brexit, the Conservative Government have echoed several aspects of Donald Trump’s hateful policies.

So I call on Brits to fight Trump, but as well I call on them to bring that fight to wherever his poisonous ideology manifests.
