Kite flyer dies in cliff plunge

12 April 2012

A man died after he stepped backwards and fell off a cliff while flying a kite, according to the coastguard.

The man was on holiday with his family from Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, including his pregnant fiancee.

Brixham coastguard was alerted by a 999 call from a member of the public who saw the 30-year-old man fall from the top of the cliffs near Noss Mayo, Plymouth, Devon.

A rescue helicopter from Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose and arrived at the scene in about 30 minutes with a doctor on board.

The man was airlifted from the cliffs where members of the public had been administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) which was continued in the flight by the doctor.

But the attempts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful and he was declared dead on arrival at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, according to a coastguard spokesman.

Brixham Coastguard Watch Manager Sean Brooks said: "The man was flying his kite 200 yards from the coastal cliff path when the accident happened.

"We would always recommend that people stay away from cliff edges.

"They can be slippery when wet and are sometimes unstable.

"It can also be easy to misjudge distances, especially when you are engaged in other activities."
