French, Swedes and Australians keenest to visit UK for coronation weekend, travel firm reveals

A travel agency has reported a huge surge in people booking trips to London for the bank holiday weekend

French and Swedish citizens are leading the way as overseas visitors scramble to book flights to London for the coronation of King Charles III on May 6.

The historic moment in British history is proving a magnet globally, figures from leading online travel agency Opodo reveal, with a 121 per cent increase in searches for trips to the capital for the bank holiday weekend compared to the same period last year.

France has seen the biggest jump in interest, with searches for flights to London up by 354 per cent year-on-year, and bookings up more than 200 per cent.

Swedish booking rates have jumped second-highest - up 146 per cent on last year - while Austria, Italy, Spain and Denmark have also seen large surges.

Coronation fever has taken hold as far away as Australia, where searches for flights to London are up 266 per cent.

Charles will be crowned alongside his wife, Camilla, who will become Queen Consort, at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, May 6 - eight months after the Queen’s death.

The ceremony, led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, will be screened across the UK.

Buckingham Palace has announced a full programme of events to mark the coronation, including a special bank holiday on Monday, May 8, 2023, two days after the ceremony.

Street parties that are due to be held across the nation, while a star-studded Coronation Concert will take place at Windsor Castle on Sunday, May 7.

The concert will feature performances from musicians including Lionel Richie and Gary Barlow, as well as an appearance from the Coronation Choir, which is formed of amateur singers and minority community groups.
