The American man repeatedly mistaken for department store John Lewis on social media has received a personal heartfelt message from John Lewis on behalf of the star of their new advert, Moz the Monster.

The 2017 John Lewis Christmas advert was unveiled to a huge fanfare on Friday morning and has already racked up millions of views online.

But for one real-life John Lewis living in Virginia US, the annual advert sparks a frenzy as scores of people mistake his account with the one belonging to the UK retail giant.

The father-of-four uses the handle @johnlewis which all year round is confused with @johnlewisretail as customers tweet him with their complaints or comments.

On Friday, after the advert was released, the computer science teacher tweeted: “I say this is one of your best! It brightened my day (which I needed, ironically, thanks to you.”

The department store's popular advert was released on Friday morning.

The John Lewis store replied to his message with a short video clip showing Moz the Monster’s paw writing a note.

The handwritten message reads: “That means so much coming from the other John Lewis!” followed by a heart symbol and signed by the character.

This year’s two-minute advert, set to a cover of Beatles track Golden Slumbers by Elbow, tells the story of little boy Joe who befriends a scruffy imaginary monster who sleeps under his bed.

Joe, who is played by seven-year-old twins Tobias and Ethan from London, gets up to mischief with Moz and the pals play together into the small hours of the morning.

The advert will be broadcast on TV at around 9.30pm on Channel 4 during Gogglebox and at a similar time across all Sky channels.

Last year, after being inundated with tweets, the American John Lewis was sent a Christmas package by shop bosses.
