The words 'Get Mogg Out' have been scrawled across a slag heap in Jacob Rees-Mogg's home constituency.

The message appeared on a pile of mining waste in Midsomer Norton in Somerset.

Mr Rees-Mogg, who is leader of the House, is defending a majority of just over 10,000 in the North East Somerset constituency in the upcoming election on December 12.

The message featured on the side of the man-made hillock until it was washed away by rain.

The slag - or spoil - heap comes from the mines that were dotted around the area, the last of which shut in 1966.

Mr Rees-Mogg, a prominent Brexiteer, has been out of the limelight since he said victims of the Grenfell Tower tragedy lacked the "common sense" to ignore advice to stay inside.

Speaking on LBC to Nick Ferrari last month, he said: “And I think if either of us were in a fire, whatever the fire brigade said, we would leave the burning building.

"It just seems the common sense thing to do. And it is such a tragedy that that didn’t happen.”

He later apologised for the comments, saying: “What I meant to say is that I would have also listened to the fire brigade’s advice to stay and wait at the time."
