Husband arrested over missing woman

12 April 2012

The husband of a mother-of-two who went missing more than three months ago has been arrested on suspicion of her murder.

Elaine Taggart, 48, from Ferring village, West Sussex, was last seen on January 3 when she gave a colleague a lift home from work.

Her red Fiat Punto was found a short distance from Goring railway station and a five-minute drive from her home on January 4.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "A 43-year-old local man was arrested today on suspicion of the murder of Elaine Taggart. He has been taken to Chichester Custody Centre for questioning."

Sources confirmed the arrested man was Mrs Taggart's husband, Andy.

A police spokesman said: "Since Mrs Taggart went missing there has been no trace of her.

A number of appeals have been made for Mrs Taggart to return home since she disappeared over three months ago, including one by her father, a 90-year-old Chelsea Pensioner.

Since she went missing both Mother's Day and her son Daniel's 14th birthday have passed with no contact from her.

Last month Sussex Police stepped up their investigation and sniffer dogs began to search the countryside around her home as they looked at the possibility she may had met with an accident or become the victim of a serious crime.

Mrs Taggart, who worked at Brighton College as a catering finance manager for Chartwells, is described as white, 5ft 6in, of medium build and with dark brown hair.
