12 April 2012

Police in Greece have arrested more than a hundred youths and raided a suspected firebomb-making hideout.

The said the action was taken in a bid to prevent riots on the anniversary of a fatal shooting of a youth by police.

Police said the house - in the Athens district of Keratsini, near the port of Piraeus - contained several sledgehammers, gas masks, a stun grenade and 200 empty beer bottles used to make firebombs.

Police said they were attacked with rocks by about 60 youths and 20 people were arrested at the scene.

Meanwhile, a memorial gathering at the spot where 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos was shot on December 6 2008, passed off peacefully.

Police said some youths later attacked officers and burned two cars. Fourteen were arrested, including five Italian and three Albanian anarchists.
