Outraged Londoners are calling for Katie Hopkins to be investigated by police over a string of tweets she posted after a suspected terrorist was detained in Whitehall.

The controversial columnist sparked outcry when she posted a message on Twitter which read: “Explosion in France, shooting at a German hospital, knife attack in London.

"And Ramadan has not yet begun."

She added: “Without food these sods get nasty”.

It came after armed police arrested a 27-year-old man carrying “a bag of knives” in Westminster on Thursday afternoon.

The Met Police received messages from several people about Ms Hopkins’ message, which was slammed for being “hate speech” and “racist”.

One man, called Damian Isherwood, said online to Ms Hopkins: “I’m reporting you for a hate crime as your hateful tweets towards people of Muslim faith will incite racial violence @MetCC.”

Another internet user, called Jennifer said: “Please do something about this woman. There is a line between free speech and hate speech.”

Joe Crumb called it “racism” and a “hate crime” while someone else called her a “hate preacher”.

The Met told all those making complaints to send officers a private message so they can take some further details.

But Ms Hopkins was undeterred and later responded to the criticism and said: “I am certain the police do not have anything more pressing to attend to. Why not start a petition as well?”

In another message posted on Twitter relating to the Whitehall incident, Ms Hopkins referred to the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan when she said: “Dear Sadiq Khan't. You want to stop hate on-line.

“I think hate on the streets might be more a pressing priority. Allah Akbar and all that.”

Another tweet read: “Sadiq’s prayers are with the knifeman at this difficult time. He has cut his hand. Ambulance staff are administering a halal plaster.”
