Fewer cases of swine flu expected

12 April 2012

The number of new cases of swine flu is expected to continue to fall, with the Government due to release its latest figures.

There were 30,000 new cases when Chief Medical Officer Liam Donaldson gave his most recent update last Thursday, compared with 110,000 a week earlier.

Flu expert Dr John McCauley said the trend downwards is likely to continue while schools and universities are on their summer holidays.

Dr McCauley, who works in the Division of Virology at the National Institute for Medical Research, said numbers may rise again when the autumn term starts.

"I think that drop will continue, then we just wait and see what happens when the schools go back again," he said. "The younger age group are the ones that are most seriously affected."

Sales of antibacterial hand rubs, soaps and cold remedies have soared since the start of the swine flu outbreak, new figures also suggest.

People are buying the products in far higher quantities than this time last year, according to an analysis of 200,000 trolleys by price comparison website mySupermarket.co.uk.

Carex Hand Gel is the most popular hand rub being bought online, with sales up 279% on this time last year. Sales of antibacterial soaps are up by 54%, liquid soap by 20%, and cough, cold and flu remedies by 70%, it said. Sales of tissues have also increased 10% on last year.

Jonny Steel, spokesperson for mySupermarket.co.uk, said: "People are clearly becoming more hygiene-conscious in the wake of the swine flu pandemic, and more aware that the best way to prevent the flu from spreading is regularly to wash or sanitise their hands."

The data comes after TV presenter Andrew Castle said on Tuesday his daughter "almost died" after taking the anti-viral drug, Tamiflu. He challenged Health Secretary Andy Burnham on GMTV after researchers cast doubt that the anti-viral drug's benefits outweighed its side-effects for children.
