Euro 2022 final: All female fly-past and record crowd expected for Germany clash

The final at Wembley Stadium kicks off at 5pm

England’s highly-anticipated clash against Germany is expected to draw in the biggest home TV audience on record for a women’s football match and will also see an all female fly-past.

Some 90,000 fans are due to fill Wembley Stadium – most hoping to watch the Lionesses secure the first major tournament title for an England team since 1966 – while millions more watch from homes, pubs and fan zones.

The record number of viewers for a women’s game is 11.7 million, which was set during England’s semi-final defeat by the United States in the 2019 World Cup, although audience records are expected to be broken on Sunday.

Commenting on the final, head coach of the team, Sarina Wiegman said: “When you are in the final then you are one of the best teams in the tournament. I think we have a very good team too and we don’t fear anyone.”

Ahead of the 5pm kick-off on Sunday, an all-female RAF flypast will take to the skies to mark occasion.

Flanked by two Typhoon fighter jets, a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft crewed by three women will soar over the north-west London arena.

Flt Lt Lauren, who helped train the first female Afghan pilots when she was deployed in Afghanistan, has said watching the England team has been “inspiring”.

“I’ve flown missions all over the world with the RAF, but this will be one of the most memorable,” she said.

“It’s been inspiring to watch the Lionesses progress and I will be loudly cheering them on as soon as I land back at RAF Brize Norton.”

The aircraft will fly over Wembley at 4.57pm, immediately after the national anthems and just before kick-off at 5pm.

Hoping to bring back the Championship silverware for the first time, the Lionesses are the underdogs against their eight-time Euro winning opponent, but will have huge support from the home crowd.

Tickets for the final sold out before the tournament began, although this hasn’t stopped some of the men’s team asking for tickets.

“Quite a lot of the England men have been in touch, just wishing us well and asking if they can have a ticket,” England midfielder Georgia Stanway said yesterday on Saturday. “Sorry lads, we’re all sold out!”

For those watching at Wembley, the main road up to the stadium will be a no drinking zone due to the chaos which overshadowed last year’s men’s final.

Thousands of ticketless fans forced their way into the stadium ahead of England v Italy in summer 2021 – though this year’s final is expected to attract a different audience.
